Mar 10 Almost every one of us who were teenagers during the eighties has vivid memories of The Breakfast Club, Rock Ballad Bands,Freddy Krueger, and The Two Coreys. We have lost one of our favorite teenage heart throbs today. Actor Corey Haim has died at the far-too-young age of 38. After news of his death hit the television and internet, stars and celebrities everywhere began expressing their deepest sorrows via Twitter.
The story of the Two Coreys goes back many years. The actors, who were both the same age, met when they were teenagers, as they both auditioned for many of the same roles, which turned into very well known movies. Both boys auditioned for “The Goonies” which Feldman got the role for, and both tried for the role in “Lucas” which Haim got. They were finally cast together in 1987 in the classic “The Lost Boys.” (What some of us call the original teen vampire movie.)
The boys hit it off right away and a lifelong friendship, full of ups and downs, was established. “We just clicked, chemistry for ourselves,” Haim told Larry King in 2007. “We can complete each other’s sentences.”
“I’ve worked with a lot of great people through the years,” Feldman added. “And with Corey, you know, you set us in front of a camera and tell us to go, and it just happens. And there’s really no explaining that, you know?” The two had appeared together on Larry King to promote their reality show “The Two Coreys” that aired from 2007 to 2008.
Both boys went through a problem with drug addiction. When Feldman was able to pull himself out of the darkness, and Haim remained, it caused great strain on the relationship. There were many times that Feldman had to give tough love, not only for Haim’s benefit, but most likely in order to keep himself from drowning as well.
There were also issues between them over the casting of “The Lost Boys 2″ and Haim ended up refusing the part after Feldman had already agreed. Feldman issued a statement,
“I feel that I need to address some of the statements that have been made in reference to Corey Haim’s and my friendship and his participation in ‘Lost Boys: The Tribe.’ I have always considered Corey Haim a brother and dear friend and have always been there for him. Although I am deeply saddened that he has decided not to participate in ‘Lost Boys 2,’ it was strictly his decision. For the record, I was not willing to go forward with any production or deal until I was assured that Corey Haim was onboard. I received confirmation from my representation that Haim had announced that he was officially attached to ‘Lost Boys 2.’
“After starting production in Vancouver, I learned that Haim had chosen to pull out of the project. The reasons for his decisions are his and his alone. Although I am saddened by Haim’s departure, I am enjoying working on the film and am very excited about working with my Frog Brother Jamison Newlander and to carry the torch forward. I am very proud to be part of this highly anticipated sequel for Warner Bros. and feel confident that we are making a film that the fans will welcome as a complimentary addition to the franchise.”
The two boys, as we all knew they would, patched up their issues, and last month, on February 18, they were standing in unison for a “TMZ” interview. The two were out together in West Hollywood, and Haim said he had been doing well on his addiction for quite a while.
“You guys still best friends?” the cameraman asked.
“Forever! Always!” they replied, almost in unison.
